R/evolution: The 2021 Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy National Conference

R/evolution recognizes and honors the evolution of Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP) and the sector over the last 20 years along with the movement moment that EPIP members and foundations are navigating here and now—the revolution. As EPIP celebrates its 20th anniversary, we continue to reimagine philanthropy so that it better nurtures and uplifts emerging Black, Indigenous, queer, trans, disabled, immigrant, women, and POC practitioners who are themselves reimagining an equitable and justice-driven future of philanthropy.

R/evolution is for everyone, whether you’re brand new to philanthropy or a returning alum looking to come home to your people. There has never been a better—and more urgent—time to celebrate and invest in the leadership of imaginative, resilient, and bold leaders in philanthropy.

Micro-Session Mon. June 7th, 3:30 – 4:00pm: Centering Participatory Approaches: Lessons Learned for Grantmaking and Evaluation

This session will present a case study of The New York Women’s Foundation’s Fund for Girls and Young Women of Color (the Fund). The Fund is a collaborative that has engaged 21 funders to date in its goal of expanding philanthropic investments in young women and transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) youth of color. The first of its kind with this specific focus, the Fund has worked to embed principles of equity and inclusion into its grantmaking work. This has included using a Participatory Review Committee to conduct site visits and make grant recommendations, as well as awarding grants in a way that is meant to lead with principles of equity (e.g., providing paid stipends for youth volunteers).

From 2019-2020, the Fund conducted a systemic evaluation of its impact. In keeping with the Fund’s value, the evaluation adopted a participatory process, including the creation of a grantee evaluation advisory group and a funder evaluation advisory group, both of which informed the evaluation questions and design.

This session will feature a conversation between the session panelists, Ijeoma Ezeofor of TCC Group and Kelsey Baker of the New York Women’s Foundation, during which they will discuss the goals of both the Fund and the evaluation and reflect on the lessons learned about participatory grantmaking and participatory evaluation. They will also share their recommendations for those hoping to conduct more participatory grantmaking and evaluation.
